Dr. Balen was born in Barrhead and raised in Naples on the family farm. He went to the University of Alberta for general sciences and then to the University of Waterloo where he obtained his Optometry degree in 1993. Dr. Balen returned to Barrhead to start practicing, buying the office in 1996. Grant enjoys farming, curling, hockey and baseball.
